Comerica Bank - Fraudulent use by scammers of my DirectExpress Debit Card
I tried to use my DirectExpress debit card to pay for a meal at Panera and was informed that my card was declined. I used my cell phone to check my card account balance and learned that it was under $15.
I then looked on the web site to find out what happened. I do not know how or where they did it, but someone obtained my card and PIN information and used them to withdraw $620 (plus fees) at an ATM. I immediately called DirectExpress customer service to report the theft. The customer representatives asked several questions, all of which seemed reasonable enough, and walked me through their remediation process, which they said could take up to 45 days!
I also had to pay to obtain a new debit card.
I am not angry with the DirectExpress program or Comerica Bank so much as I am angry that someone was able to skim my card number and PIN information and steal money from me. As a side note, I wish that DirectExpress cards could be used on ApplePay or at least something more secure than swipe cards.
Reason of review: having money stolen.
Monetary Loss: $623.
Preferred solution: Full refund.
Comerica Bank Pros: Responsiveness.
Location: Boston, Massachusetts
